Cross-Cultural Communication Tips

Sometimes it can be difficult to communicate with students when they first arrive. Please see some tips below for ways to assist in the communication process.

Provide clues to meaning

  • Use drawings, gestures, actions, mime and visual materials to provide clues to meaning.
  • If necessary, repeat your actions using the same simple sentences and actions.
  • Simplify your message as much as possible, breaking them into smaller, manageable parts to give the student a chance at comprehending.
  • Be aware that in some cultures it is considered rude to make eye contact, so students may feel uncomfortable looking at you directly when talking.

Study Abroad Family Feedback

We recently requested feedback from all of the families hosting students on the Study Abroad Program. We would like to thank you all for your timely response and wonderful stories and photos. This feedback is passed on not only to the NSW Department of Education, but also to the Education Agents overseas and the students parents. A staff member from the NSW Department of Education will be travelling to Germany shortly and will be taking copies of this feedback with her to discuss with Education Agents in person. We would like to share a few stories and photos here.
